Equestria is more like the country. =) I think the castle place that Twilight Sparkle used to live is called Canterlot (or something similar, I couldn't hear very well...)
Yes, Equestria is the name of the region. Ponyville is a small town founded by Earth Ponies, and Canterlot is the capital where the royal family resides and one (some?) of the most prestigious schools (universities?) are located.
That's correct. Canterlot is the mountainside city where Princess Celestia lives, and where Twilight Sparkle came from. Ponyville is the name of the town she comes to live in afterwards. Equestria is either the name of the country, the region, or even the planet itself.
